Novemb 20: 1773
Dear Sir
Upon the death of Mr. John Hilton who was
comptroller of the upper district of James River I have
inclosed to your care a letter to Lord North which letter
I beg good Sir. you to send by a safe hand soon as you
receive it, it is in consequence of a second letter
I received from Capt: Phipps wherein Lord North
has promist me the first vacancy that should happen
and am hopefull I shall be thought on in the lower
district, tho the upper rather then nothing provided
I have the same indulgence as hilton had and should
I suceed I am determined to receive nothing from
Boston but send a power to receive annually my salery
as Mr. Hanbury did formerly that is if you would think
proper to accept it, (as I am consious I have acted with
uprightness and Honour in the Execution of that little office
I held in the Customs it must be regreting to loose it
without commiting a fault) or anything laid to my charge
which Lord North sais there was no intention of doing
me the least Injury the Office was supposed to be vacant
I beg you will do me what service in this affair you can
as you may, depend I will make it up to you, as I
suppose Lord North may Expect some gentlemen
will appear in my Intrest which favour I shall always
acknowledge who am Dear Sir with great Esteem
for you & family your most Obedt Humble Servt
