William Cary letter to John Norton, merchant in London, England. Cary writes concerning his efforts to sort out the mess Edward Cary made of Norton's interests in Virginia. He informs Norton that William Goosley will be handling the business henceforth and that some wages are due for the work he has had in managing Norton's affairs. Cary also notes that he is inclosing a second copy of Hudson Allen's bill in case the first had not arrived.

York Virga. 23d. Decr. 1768

Dear Sir,

Yours of the 3d Sepr. p Capt. Clarke came safe to hand
and am greatly obliged to you for many favours, especially
for honouring Mr. William Goosleys draft on my Accot.
in Antiqua, he meet with a bargain which he knew would
answer my purpose was the reason he drew on you
when I undertook the management of your Accots. here, it
was intirely to serve you, knowing it must interfer much
with my own business, your Son was at a loss for a person
he could depend on I therefore engaged on the conditions
to give it up when I pleased, on Mr. Goosley's return to
Virga. I recommended him to your Son as a fit person, knowg
him very capable & that he would spare no pains, the 1st. Sepr.
I deliver'd up to your Son everything in my hands, at the same
time let him know what I had done which he approved of and
I hope is well satisfied he has employd Mr. Goosley from that
time & hope he will give your Son & you satisfaction, the most
difficult matters were settled in my time. EC had given all the Security
he was able to make, I had taken many Bonds, some of which carry
Interest two years back & had settled most of the disputes with
them that wanted to have Credit in your Books for what EC owed them
turn over

if your Son has mentioned this affair to you I hope it has been
in such manner as to have your approbation which I most
ernestly desire, we did not agree what Wages I was to have only
Mr. Hatley Norton told me I should be satisfied for the Trouble &
expences I was at, he repaid me 45/, what I had paid for Ferriages & travelg
expenses, I date my Wages from 1st April (the time your Books was taken
away from E Cary, 'tho I was several months before assistg him to get
the Books Posted up) till the 1st. Sepr. which is 5 months, which I shall
leave to you or your Son to set the value on as I have deserved

I wrote you 2d Novr. last by Capt. White of Bristol Inclosing
Hudson Allens Bill on yourself for £14..14..9 which hope has
got safe to hand, but for fear it should not have inclosed a Second of
those Bills, if you send me the goods I wrote to you for shall take
care to remitt you in Tobo. or Bills for them, this goes by Captn.
Martin by way of Bristol & hope will find you & family in good
