Charles Payne, Fauquier County, Virginia, letter to John Hatley Norton, Winchester, Virginia, dated September 22, 1789. Payne, Norton's overseer at Effingham Forest, writes about the state of the plantation's crops and enslaved laborers. About the latter he includes a list of those needing clothing and writes about Milley whom he fears will catch cold so has employed her at spinning. Payne requests Norton allow him to rent the property that he used to rent to Smith assuring him he won't neglect his duties at Effingham. He also writes about the livestock at Effingham including Norton's colt and that of George Norton.

Fauquier County - Sept. 22nd. 1789

Sir

All is well on the Plantation at present
both Nigroes and stock - I have a verry
great Prospect of a good Crop of both Corn
and Tobacca I have hous,d about 20 Hhds
of Tobacca I Expect my crop will be between
20 and 30 Hhds of Tobacca - I Expect I
shall make about 400 Barrells of Corn
at Least I have sowed all my Corn ground
in Wheat in august it is come up verry
well and looks well - milley is well:
of her complaint but I have not turnd
her out to work yet as she is apt to ketch
cold I have kep her a spinning of wool
the stock is all in Verry good order -

Sir you have one of the best colts come
of your riding mare that is in fauquier
County - Mr. George Nortons Colt is in
Verry good order - I have put up
Three beaves - and six muttens to fatten

Sir I shold be willing to serve you
an other year if you would Rent me
the Place belonging to you that you
have formily rented to smith for to
put my stock at and boys - my haveing

Ducks and Pullets but there is
not many Turkeys old betty had verry
bad luck with them - if you want
