Craig, a Williamsburg silversmith, writes Norton that he is unable to make a remittance on his account at the present but hopes to make it to Norton's son, John Hatley Norton, during the October court session. He complains that times are difficult for tradesmen due to a shortage of work and poor prices.

I Recd. yours per Capt Robinson
where you desire me to make a Remitance
of your Acct. which I am extreamly sorrow
is not in my power at present, however
I hope to pay it to your son in Octr Court
which I hope will do as well

I asure you sir times is very hard wh.
Trades Men in this Country at present
we have very little Trade & what we do
we are ill paid for it. I hope you will
excuse My not pay-ing you before this Time
& you will much oblige your
