Paris October 27-1770-
Dear Sir,
You will be surpris'd perhaps to recieve a
Letter from one whom you have probably forgot, &
perhaps your Surprize will be increas'd when you
know the Occasion of it. It is Simply this - when I went
to study Physic at Edinburgh, My Father settled a
Credit for me with a Gentleman there - after my
Studies were finish'd, & I had taken my Degree, I
wanted to make a Voyage into France - My Father
consented, & I got a Letter of Credit from my Banker
in Scotland, upon one in Paris - upon My drawing
for the first £50, I found that I lost considerably,
at the Rate of 5PC. beside the Common Deductions;
all which would have been sav'd had my Credit been
upon London - I know no one in London, whom I could
address with so much Hopes of Success, upon such an
Occasion as this, as yourself - If you think yt you could
with Safety, & Convenience, give me a Draught upon
London for 50£ - it will save me some Money - if you
you cannot you will be so obliging as to let me know it, &
to Excuse the Trouble I have given you - My Compts to
Mrs Norton - I hope soon to have the Pleasure of presenting
them in Person.

Yr most obedt James McClurg
