York County, Virga. 9th. Novembr. 1770.

Dear Sir,

I received yrs. of ______ inclosing Shop Notes for
Sundrie Goods amounting to £_____ for wch. I am much Oblig'd.
The Shoes bought of Mr. Welch will not one pr. fit, either my
Wife or myself tho' the leather and make is tollerable well done,
I can't conceive how they came not to fit when I sent the
measure of our feet, it has been a great disappointment to us,
Pray be so kind to let Mr. Sharpe know I have been much injured
by his sending me Tongs Shovels & Pokers full of flaws & cracks
by wch. means they have come to pieces before they have been used
a fortnight, these I last imported, one of the Shovels is almost fit
to fall to pieces & has never been used, it really is not worth
a single farthing, & out of those which were bot. by Mr. Merritt
Moore for my use in the Year 1761. of the two Sets, both Pr.
Tongs & one Shovel were absolutely broke before they came to hand.
Therefore provided Mr. Sharpe will not make me any Satisfact:
I beg the favr. of you, for the future, not to buy anything for
me from his Shop, and I do think in my Conscience he ought to
send me a Nett set of Tongs Shovel and Poker by the first of Your
Ships, if Mr. Sharpe desires it, I'll send him the Affidavit of the
several Persons who see what I now complain of, Opened, and
showed me the several defects I now mention. Inclosed you have
a Bill of Exchange for £60 Sterling wch. be pleased to receive
of Messrs. Wm. Cunningham & Co. merchts. in Glasgow and place
to my Credit, The ballce of our Accots. I'll remit you as soon as I possibly can
either by Tobo. or cash. I have recd. the Magazines very regularly
and am Obliged to you for them, Being now at Wmsburg and
much hurried, can't write so fully as I could wish but shall do so
when I send you a second Bill, I am,

With the highest Esteem
Sir, Yr. Most Obt.Servant
