Williamsburg 17th. Decr. 1771.
Dear Sirs.
In order to close my Acct. to that time with
Lord Botetourt's Exor I took the Liberty on the 12th. Ulto. to
draw on you in favr. of the Duke of Beaufort for £237..11.10,
& the 13th. Inst. I gave Dr d'Segiueyra a Bill for £20 : both
which you'll be pleased to pay & charge them to my private
Acct. I expected to make you a handsome Remittance
from the Court of Oyer this Month both on my own & the
Treasury Accts.; but we have reach'd the above Date &
the Merchts. who deal in Bills are not yet come to Town
& are not expected till the 20th.; what they will do in
the Exchange Way I don't know, but hope I shall be
able to furnish myself. In the mean time; that you
may not be too much in Advance for me, I send you my Bill
on Mr. Backhouse for £250 & on Mr. Waring for £25
both which, when paid, you'll be pleased to place
to my private Account. I see several Books advertizd:
which I should be glad to have sent by the first Opportu:
ity. I inclose you the Advertizements themselves
marked [illegible] "NB. this to be sent", to save you the trouble of
much Enquiry. As my own Crop has proved short,
I would gladly buy some Tobo., if there is a Prospect of
not losing by it. I should be glad to know what Sorts
suit your Market best & how far, in prudence, I may
venture to go. I am, Gentlemen, with much Esteem
Yr. affte. hble Servt.
