Mr. John Norton
I wrote you the 1st. Ulto., acknowledging
the receipt of your favour of the 29th. of May, -
with the Invoice of the very dear postChaise. -
made for me by Mt. Waller, to which refer. That
Carriage is very neat, but extravagantly dear,
I could not conceive that so small a Machine
could cost so much Money, and now, I find that
I can not travel far in it without four Horses, so
must trouble you to get Waller to send me an
other pair of Harness, for pole end Horses, with
a swingletree &c to match the pair of Harness he
sent me with the Chaise. You will receive with
this, a copy of the Invoice inclosed in my last, &
will observe a few Articles added, endorsed on the
back, which be pleased to direct your Clerk to
attend to. I wish the Sales of the Tobacco
shipt you this Years, may encourage me to enlarge
my consignment next Year, [illegible] prices from

Bristol - ten and fifteen Guineas a Hhd. I
begin to be impatient to see the London sales, - but all
in good time. - I thought I had shipped you Tobacco
in the Greenvale, but on examining Bill of Lading
find it went to Mr Gist. ~ I sincerelely congratulate
you & Mrs. Norton, on the birth of a Grand Daughter,
and with best wishes for your health & happiness,

Dear Sir.
I wrote you the 20th. Insta. inclosing
you a Bill drawn by your J.H.N., on your House
for eighty pounds Sterlg, which I desired you would
place to the credit of Mrs. Rebecca Chamberlayne, &
was intended to pay for the Charriott Mr Claiborne wrote
you to have made for her; at same time advised you that
she had given her sister Taylor all her share of the
English Estate, and that she requested you would place -
the money arising from the sale and all expence attending
the same, to the private account of her sister, and that
you would transmit to Mrs Chamberlayne her Acct.
Curt. with you.
I now inclose you the second Bills
of the setts of Excha. above mentioned, and am to
acknowledge the receipt of your Lre of the 18th. of July
with my Acct. Curt., in which I think there is a
mistake of 19/6 to my prejudice, but can not point
it out, so I have no copy of the Amount from which
you take the balce. of £11..13.. 11 and which I must
therefore trouble you to send me. I think I desired in my
last that you would add to my Invoice two hampers of best
bottled porter and a dozen packs of playing Cards.
I beg leave to trouble you to forward the Lrs you
will recieve under cover with this, as soon as they get to
hand and you will oblige

Sir
I received your Letter of the 9th. of March and
am obliged to you for the trouble you have taken about the
Brentwood Estate, I have executed the Deeds & papers you
sent in for conveying it to Mr. Fisher and as I have agreed
that my Sister Taylor shall have the whole purchase money,
she is to pay all expense attending it, therefore request that you
will charge her with the whole expence, and credit my Account
for what you may haved placed to it for my proportion of your
advance for that business.
I received the Goods by the Ship Lyon agreeable
to the Invoice, and intended to have shipt you in return by her
six Hhds of Tobacco, which I understand Mr. Claiborne wrote to
you to insure, but Captn. Goosley has left them out therefore you
will be pleased to have the premium returned. I hear that Captn.
Robinson is arrived and by him shall ship them six Hhhds &
six or seven more that I have in James River if he will get them
round. I now inclose you an Invoice of Goods to be sent
me in the spring, and hope you will give directions to the Tradesmen
to be careful in the choice of them, for the Goods sent this Year are
in general bad, but of this you will be more fully informed by
Your other Correspondents, I have in the Invoice set down & suit
of worked Muslin and shall be much obliged to Mrs. Norton if

for me, I want it to hold two persons and light enough to be
drawn by two of our Horses, at the same time neat & strong &
to have convenient places to fix Trunks & for travelling, and as
you know th size and general strength of our Horses I beg
you will give the maker such information as will guide him
in making it suitable to this Country, especially the Wheels
which are seldom made light or strong in England.
As I shall want to know the state of my Account with
you beg you will forward a copy of it in the Spring.

Dear Sir.
I wrote many months ago to messrs. James Buchanan and company
for an elegant sett of table and tea china, with bowls of the same of different sizes,
decanters and drinking glasses, an handsome service of glass for a dessert, four
middlesized and six lesser dishes, and three dozen plates of hard metal, 100 skins
of writing parchment proper for enrolling our acts of assembly on, several bundles of
best quills, two pieces of blanketing and as many of rolls for servants, 10 or 12
pair of shoes and two of slippers for myself, and one or two other articles which I do
not recollect. At that time there was due to me about thirty pounds, I believe,
for I have mislaid their last account current; and besides I had shipped four
hogsheads of tobacco to that house. The goods have not come to hand, neither
have I yet an accoount of sales of the tobacco. If they have not sent, nor de
sign to send the goods, I desire you will be so kind as let me have them, with
a bonnet for mrs Wythe, and present the inclosed order and receive the balance.
A few days since I desired you would procure for me an handsome well built
chariot, with the devicenon sent painted on it, for which you may depend on a
seasonable remittance. I again beg the favour of your attention to the affair of the journals. If
they are not to be procured, let me be informed what 120 printed copies of them
to the year 1752 will cost. If they do not exceed the sum I suppose, the assem-
bly, I doubt not, will defray the expense. The prospect of a benefit to me, I flat-
ter myself, will not only excuse the earnestness and frequency of my importuni-
ties, but stimulate your endeavours to serve me in this business. You will oblige
me by sending a copper plate, with the arms of Virginia neatly engraved, and
some impressions of them to be pasted on the books belonging to the house of bur-
gesses. If any additions are made on the plate in consequence of what is proposed
within, I will cheerfully pay the extraordinary cost. J H N left us a day or
two ago in good health & I forgot to mention that I had drawn bills on mess.

Dear Sir;
If you will be so good as procure for me a well built
handsome post-charriott, I will remit the price of it in
due season. Something like the inclosed device may be
put upon it. Of the several articles I have lately wrote
for, the glasses, balls and other apparatus, such as are
used by the house of commons in balloting, and the du-
plicates of our journals, I am most anxious about, and
earnestly desire your particular attention to. The jour-
nals especially would be of considerable advantage to
