I have just returned from Richmond and
received your letter and assure you am much surprised as well as concern
ed at the contents. you may inform Mr Norton that the report which has
reached him is altogether without foundation, nor can I imagine how it
cou'd have originated, had my father objected to the Union I shou'd most
certainly have informed him of long since. My father is averse to my marry
ing as soon as I wish, he thinks it wou'd have been to my advantage to
have waited a few years longer before I engaged myself; but he thinks
my choice is as good a one as I cou'd have made, and has not the
smallest objection on that head.

My dear sir -

This morning Mr. Dinwiddie delivered
me your letters, and the two haunches. We are much
obliged to you for them.

I have had no intercourse with
young W. L., since I received your last upon the
subject, and wrote to him in the usual manner as
to the necessity of his father's consent. It has been
said, that he has intended to come hither for
some months past. I suppose that he has accoun-
ted for the delay to C; but I can hear nothing
from him. The affair is mysterious to us; but
does not seem to make any impression upon
her. So that I presume upon a perfect under-
standing as subsisting between the parties. I
have often thought of writing to the old gentle-
man; and this I shall do, unless and ecclaircisse-
ment comes in due season. You will readily believe,
that so definitive a step, as that which is on
the tongue of report, would never be assented
to by us without your approbation.

I am my dear sir
yr. sincere friend
Edm: Randolph.

When W. L: first wrote to me
I answered him, as you know.
His berbal reply thro' Lewis
Nicholas was that his father
had consented.

Philadelphia July 24. 1790

My dear sir

Your two late letters were delivered
to me on my arrival here. But I did not reach this city,
until monday last, after much fatigue, great expence, and
real Dangers by water. However except my wife and two youn
ger children, who are slightly indisposed, we are all in
pretty good health.

I conferred with Betsey on the sub.
ject of W. L's letter. She concurs with me in believing, that
every circumstance in the power of himself promises happi.
ness. But the sense of his father is at least a very desire.
able thing to be known. That he can make an ample pro.
visison for his son, is undoubted; but what prospects from
professional success W. may have, independant of his father's
aid, I shall not decide. The law is overstocked already;
and it will require abilities of a very respectable
rank to obtain a livelihood in that line. I do not mean
by this, that the consent of the old gentleman should be an
indispensable condition ; because a parent can best determine,
how far it may be proper in almost any case to thwart the
affections of his child. But I should suppose, that it

[Page 2]

might be enough to urge W. to bring his father to some
declaration of his assent; and then take such measures, as
prudence may suggest.

I have a house here at 90£
Penna. Money per annum ; where I shall leave my family
and proceed to New-York.

Y[ou]rs very sincerely
& afftely
Edm: Randolph.

You may be assured, that nothing de
cisive will be done, without full previous notice to you.

War seems to be on the point of being
quieted; as a convention s was to be held between the belligerent
powers on the 27th. of Novr. for that purpose.

The report on the judiciary system will be
printed to-morrow, and changes it radically -
