Daniel Call & Company, Brunswick County, Virginia, letter to John Norton & Son, merchants of London, England, and Williamsburg, Virginia, dated December 10, 1773. Daniel Call writes that his company has opened a store and wants to establish a line of credit to acquire goods. John Norton's son, John Hatley Norton, would not extend credit without his father's permission.

Gent^l,

We have lately opened a Retail Store
in this County & shall be in want of ab^t £1000 St.g worth ^of Goods
from y^r. Port for next Fall, and as we are Entire Strangers
to any Body there and desirous of Setling a Correspondence
M Theo Feild who is one of our Partners on mentioning y^e
Same to him recommended y^r. House to us which Enduced
us to make application to y^r Son M^r. Jn^o. H. Norton in
Williamsburg who told us that he would not Engage to
Ship any Goods to Virg^a. (Sertain) with out y^e Money was
Sent with y^e. Orders but desird we would write you upon
y^e Subject and was kind enough to promise he would also
mention us to you which we make no doubt but he
has it is uncertain wheter we shall have it in our
Power to make any remittance with y^e Orders (if we can
we will) but as we do not owe to any Merch^t. in Engl^d.
a Shilling do think we can Safely Promis a full Remittance
within 12 mo. as we should not willingly be disappointed
of y^e. Goods are desirous of haveing your Sentiments on the
Matter, for which purpose you be kind enough to Write
us fully by y^e first opportunity afte Rec^t. of this, which
will be in time to send our Orders away either to y^r. House
or else where are
