Virginia York 25th August 1768

Dear Sir

Your favour of the 23d May have lately received by which I find
Mr. Rowe's & Mrs. Sauvaires bills are accepted and hope are both
carried to the Credit of my Accot. with you, Inclosed is a Certificate of
the late Mrs. Sauvaires Marriage to Mr. John Newton Cooke which
suppose will entitle her to the Pension to that time but should it not
be agreable to form please to advise her Husband or me & it shall be done
as directed. Mr. Hatley Norton will inclose you two Bills of Exchange
one of £25 drawn by Capt. William Hayes on your Self and is paid
for out of money I received for you, the other is his Son's draft on you
in order to Settle his Accot. in your Books here both of which Bills
are placed to remittances home, also two Hheads Tobacco RC No 1 &
IWP No. 7. which I received for Debts due to you at 20/ p Ct I hope they
will sell so that yo may be no looser, I am ashamed that I am not
able to give you a better Accot. of remittances, when I first agreed to take
this business in hand I flatterd myself from the list of Debts that
I could have remitted you by the Brilliant at least a Thousand Pounds
but on applying to the debtors many of them dispute their Accots. as not
having proper Credits, they have deliver'd Mr. Edwd. Cary Tobo. &c. in discharge
of their Debts to you & he has given them Credit in his own Books where they
owed but a trifle, on application to Mr. Cary he agrees he owes those people
the difference between his Accot. against them & what he has received of them
but that does not seem to be agreable to them, they expect I am to give them
Credit in your Books for that difference which I will not do without good
advice, I have had so many disputes of this sort that I would have given
the business up but for the desire I have to serve you who I know have taken
a great deal of trouble on my Accot. in regard to Mrs. Sauvaires affairs.

Billy Goosley is just arrived from the West Indias & informs me of his draw
-ing a Bill of Thirty pounds Sterl.g on you, on my Accot. I flatter myself you
have Honour'd the draft tho am uneasy it should happen when I have no
money in your Hands, Inclosed is Wm. Goosleys Order on your Son George
Flowerdewe for £11..5..8 which suppose is good if I can get a Bill before

before your Ship Sails shall be very glad if I cannot (as the stime is short & am
very busie) I will remitt you by Hubberd or Esten. I have made out a small
invoice for goods, which please to send me by the return of your Ship if I should
have money enough in your hands by that time.

If you should send two ships to Virginia next year & you should think
fit to give George Goosley the Command of one of them the Command of one of them it would be very agre-
able to some of your good Friends, I know your regard for his Mother will
prompt you to do everything for her Son that your interist will admitt of
you may depend on my taking the first opportunity of remiting to you
my Compliments to Mrs. Norton & family
I remain Sir

Your much oblig'd Servant
William Cary
