Samuel and John Smith, Baltimore, Maryland, letter to John Hatley Norton, Winchester, Virginia, dated December 12, 1785. The Smiths write that they can't sell Norton's tobacco at the price he ask. They inform him of the prices for tobacco in Richmond, Fredericksburg and Petersburg and request his further instructions concerning the tobacco. They also inform Norton that ginseng is not selling.

Yours of 2d. Instt. we are favor'd
with. covering Inve. of 4 Hhd Tobacco. which was recd. Immy.
on Arrival here - We are sorry to Inform you that had we
recd. no Limit we could not have sold your Tobacco at more
than 35/ If at that & we fear every Day Delay will Lower
the price - however it must wait your farther Orders. At
present we should be Laugh'd at were we to ask 40/ p [illegible]
at Petersburg. Richmond & FredBg. the price is
21/6 to 22/6 Cash & 24/ In goods - ginseng after this week
will not meet with a Sale - With respect we are
