Louisa County 3d September 1771

Mr John Norton & Son

Gentlemen

This will inform you if you [have]
not already heard of the Death of your good Friend &
my worthy Partner Mr Francis Jerdone, who departed
this life the 5th of last month, much regreted by all
his acquaintance as he was a very useful & deserving
man - But his family & friends have this Comfort that
he has left not only a Clear Estate but all his Affairs in
the best of Order - I shall still continue to carry the Trade on
on the joint Accots., till the first of January. After which
time it will be on my own, And As I was always
satisfied with your purchase of Goods, & every other
transaction you did for Jerdone & Pottie - If it will
be still agreeable for you to continue the correspondence
with me & supply me yearly with what Goods [torn, illegible]
from your port you may depend I [torn, illegible]
it my study that proper remittance be made you

You have here Inclosed an Order from your
Son Mr John H Norton for One Hundred & Seventy Three
pounds Five Shillings & tenpence Sterling being for his
half of the purchase of 30 hhds Toba shipt on Bo[ard]
of the Virginian Capt. Robertson in Company [torn, illegible]
where is likewise 4 hhd shipt. on Board of the [torn, illegible]
ship Markt GP. That with the half proceeds of 30 hhds
in Company & the above Order, you'll please place
to the Credit of J & P Accot. - I have given
Capt Archd Crawfurd (of Greenock) Orders to draw upon
you for the Balance J & P owes him, a sum not to exceed
200£ st please honor the same when presented, As also
a small sum Mr Samuel Gist will Call on you for -

you have herewith an Order for Sundry Goods, which you'll
please purchase & send in Early in the Spring, making
full Insurance thereon, If there is not enough money
in your hands after Debting J & P Concern with the Orders
mentioned - to pay for the Goods now Ordered, in that case
please Debit Mr Francis Jerdone Accot with what is Short
& As soon as its convenient should be glad of a state of the
whole & shouold be very glad how soon I have a state of
Mr Jerdon'es Accot.. As I am with his Spouse left Ext:
& want much to have All his Affairs finally settled
please Observe in the scheme of Goods I have markt
Sundry Articles S F being for Mrs. Jerdone family use, this
I desire youll have put on the Goods as purchased that
may be known here, As its needless to have them packed
seperate with you I have got no Letters from Robertson
