John Page Jr. letter to John Norton, 1768 July 11

Letter of John Page to John Norton, merchant in London, complaining of the conduct of Captain Maxwell whose failure to deliver goods in a timely fashion forced Page to buy from Captain Esten. Maxwell's early sailing made it impossible for Page to provide Maxwell the cash due him and Page hopes Norton will honor the order drawn on him for Maxwell. Page hopes to receive £500 at the October court which he will use to cover the order by placing the funds in the hands of Norton's son, John Hatley Norton. Page notes that he made but 4 hogsheads of tobacco last year but bought 10 more which he will ship by Captain Robertson.

D^r. S^r.

I have just Time enough to tell
you, that having been under a Necessity
of buying many Things of Cap^t. Esten,
(to which Necessity I was reduced by Maxwells
Negligence, for I rec^d. nothing from him
till about a Week ago) & he sailing much
sooner than I expected; as I could not procure
the Cash due to him, I ventured to draw that
Order with which he will wait on you, &
which, I shall be much obliged to you
if you will accept. As I am to receive
500 £ in the October Court I propose to replace
that Sum in your Son'^s Hands.

I made but 4 Hhd^s. of Tobacco last Year
but I have bought 10 more which I shall
send you by Cap^t. Robertson.

My Wife joins with me in Comp^ts. & best
wishes to you your Lady & Family
& I am S^r. your Friend, & humble
