Insurance policy issued by the Royal Exchange Assurance for the property of John Turner in the vicinity of Bridgetown, Barbados. The policy covered Turner's dwelling house, kitchen, coachhouse, shed, necessary house, stable, rabbit and pigeon houses and slave dwellings. It was paid by John Norton, merchant of London, England. A memorandum on the verso notes the damage sustained by the shed in a hurricane in the year 1780.

By the CORPORATION of the ROYAL-EXCHANGE ASSURANCE
of HOUSES and GOODS from FIRE.

This present Instrument or Policy of Assurance witnesseth, That whereas, Mr. John Norton of Gold
Square Crutched Friars London Merchant for Account of John Tucker of the Island of Barbadoes Esquire hath agreed
to pay the Corporation of the Royal-Exchange Assurance, at ther Office in London the Sum of Nine Pounds
for the Assurance of One Thousand Pounds on the Dwelling House of the said John Tucker Letter A and on the
Shed adjoining situate in a Street leading over the New Bridge in the Bay, in or near Bridge Town in the Parish of
St. Michael in Barbadoes aforesaid One Hundred Pounds on a Building letters B and C being Kitchens with
Ovens, Rabbitt and Pigeon House situate near Sixty Pounds on a Building Letter D being Necessary House, Bathing
House, Negro Houses and Coachhouse situate near the last mentiond Building and Forty Pounds on a Building Letter
E being Negro Houses and Stable situate adjoining One end of Letter D aforesaid - all the said Buildings are Warranted
to be brick and Stone built and cover'd with Stone and tile
from Loss or Damage by Fire. Now know all Men by these Presents, That the Capital Stock, Estate, and Securities
of the said Corporation, shall be subject and liable to pay, make good and satisfy unto the said Assured
his Heirs, Executors or Administrators, any Loss or Damage which shall or may happen
to the said Buildings by Fire, within the Space of twelve Calendar Months, from the Day of the
Date of this Instrument or Policy of Assurance, not exceeding the Sum of Twelve Hundred Pounds in the whole or respectively
as aforesaid
and shall so continue, remain, and be subject and liable, as aforesaid, from Year to Year, to be computed from the Thirty first
Day of July in every Year, for so long Time as the said Assured shall well and
truly pay or cause to be paid the Sum of Nine Pounds to
the said Corporation at their Office aforesaid, on or before the Thirty first Day of July which shall be in each
succeeding Year, and the said Corporation shall agree thereto, by accepting and receiving the same, which said Loss or Damage
shall be paid in Money immediately after the same shall be settled and adjusted, deducting only Three Pounds per Cent, or other-
wise if the said Loss or Damage shall not be adjusted, settled, and paid (making such Deduction as aforesaid) within sixty Days
after Notice thereof shall be given to the said Corporation by the said Assured that then the
said Corporation, their Officers, Workmen or Assigns, shall, at the Charge of the said Corporation, immediately after the Expi-
ration of the said Sixty Days, begin to rebuild or repair the said Buildings so burnt or damnified
by Fire, and within a reasonable Time put the same into as good a Condition as it was in at the Time when such Fire happened,
the Wainscot, Sculpture or Carving Work thereunto belonging (if any) being in case of an Adjustment of the said Loss or Da-
mage, to be rated and valued at no more than Three Shillings per Yard, and in case of rebuilding or repairing by the said
Corporationto be made good according to that Rate and Value, and not otherwise. Provided always nevertheless, and it is
hereby declared to be the true Intent and Meaning of this Deed or Policy, that the said Stock, Estate, and Securities of the said
Corporation shall not be subject or liable to pay or make good to the Assured, any Loss or Damage by Fire which shall happen by
any Invasion, Foreign Enemy, or any Military or Usurped Power whatsover. Provided also, that this Deed or Policy shall
not take place or be binding on the Corporation until the Premium for One Year is paid, or in case the said Assured
shall have already made, or shall hereafter make any Assurance upon the Buildings
aforesaid, or on any Goods therein, or if the said Buildings at the
Time when any such Fire shall happen, shall be in the Possession of, or Lett to any Person who shall use or exercise therein the
Trade of a Sugar Baker, Apothecary, Chemist, Colourman, Distiller, Bread or Bisket-Baker, Ship or Tallow-Chandler,
Oylman, Stable-keeper, Innholder, Brewer, or Maltster, or shall be made use of for the stowing or keeping of Hemp, Flax,
Oyl, Tallow, Pitch, Tar or Turpentine, but that in all or any of the said Cases these Presents, and every Clause, Article, and
Thing herein contained, shall cease, determine, and be utterly void and of none Effect, or otherwise shall remain in full Force
and Virtue. In Witness whereof the said Corporationhave caused their Common Seal to be hereunto affixed. Dated in
London, the Thirty first Day of July in the Thirteenth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign
Lord George the Third by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c.
and in the Year of our Lord 1773 ~

Memorandum The Assurd having informd the Company that by the late Hurricane in
Barbadoes in the year 1780 the Shed adjoining his Dwelling House within mentioned
was unroofd & from the scarcity of tiles is obligd to be coverd with Shingles; It is therefore
hereby agreed that this Assurance shall be & remain in full force notwithstanding such
Alterations The Assurd hereby warranting to send as soon as possible a Plan & Valuation
of the Premises Assurd, & to Inform the Company whether there is any Communication
between the said Dwelling House & Shed
