Balfour informs Norton that his vessel is up the river and that his son, John Hatley Norton, is upcountry and well; he requests Norton procure a lottery ticket for Mrs. Mary Balfour and mentions the consternation produced in America by the Townshend Acts.

York Town 13th 1768

Dear Sir

I recd. your obliging favour by Capt. Robertson, and was glad
to hear that you & Mrs. Norton were left well. I came up here to see
Capt. Esten fairly off. Your ship has been gone up the River
some time & your Amiable Son is up the Country I saw him not long
since he was then perfectly well.

Times seem worse & worse here, God knows what the
distressed Circumstances of Individuals, & the General discontent all over
America at some Late Acts may produce.

We have little Newes only the prospect of Glorious Crops.
I have taken the liberty to give you the trouble to buy for Mrs.
Mary Balfour a Lottery ticket in the present Lottery & have enclos'd
12 pistoles & 2 half Johannes not knowing the [1 word illegible] Cost should it be
deficient please to advance it for her. I know your kindness to us &
that you will pardon this trouble. Mrs. Balfour & Charlotte begs their
Love to you in which I join most sincerly.
