Virginia 8th June 1771
Messrs. John Norton & Son,
Gentlemen,
I wrote you the 10th August P Capt. Robertson, and there
Inclos'd you his Bill of Lading for one hh'd Tobacco ship'd you in the
Brilliant, which I hope was deliver'd in good order, since which, my
Mother has not been favour'd with a line from you.
This is to acquaint you that I have put on board
the Lyon Capt. George Goosley, on Accot. of my Mother, 6 hh'ds Tobacco, on
which be pleas'd to Insure on her Accot. £50 - Sterling clear, in case of
a loss, your Son Mr JH Norton, has been kind enough to advance, for
my Mother, on these 6hh'ds Tobacco £33..6..8 Sterling, for which
have given him a Bill on you, which Bill, I hope you'll honour,
as it was impossible for her to Ship the whole of the Tobacco without,
I hope to hear from you by Capt Robertson, whose arrival we
daily expect.
I doubt not e'er this reaches you, but you have
heard of the Destruction up James & Rapahannock Rivers
occasion'd by a Fresh, which was many feet higher than ever
known, it has carried away several Warehouses, with all the
Tobacco in them, which is computed to be at least 4000 Hhds
together with the destruction of the preparations of this present
Crop, by destroying the fences & Stock, many people are gret suffer-
=er's by this unfortunate rain. I shall write you at the return of
Capt Goosley, and am Respectfully
